When a potential customer asks ChatGPT, Google AI, or Perplexity who to hire near them, does your business show up, and is it described correctly? Before we offered Search and AI Visibility work to a single client, we ran the process on Edge IQ Consulting first. We call it Client Zero. We set a documented baseline, found where answer engines had too little clear information to work with, made targeted improvements, and measured the change every week. At baseline our score on the EDGE AI Visibility Index was 32 out of 90. By day 41 it was 48, a 16-point gain and a 50% improvement over our baseline. This is one internal case study, not a guarantee of rankings, citations, traffic, or leads. It is evidence that the process is measurable and repeatable.
At a glance
- Baseline score: 32 out of 90
- Latest documented score: 48 out of 90
- Change: +16 points, a 50% improvement over baseline
- Scoring framework: the EDGE AI Visibility Index (9 signals, 90 points)
- Measurement period: 41 days
- Observation cadence: 8 weekly snapshots
- Business measured: Edge IQ Consulting (Skiatook, Oklahoma)
- Important: A higher visibility score means answer engines have more complete and usable information about the business. It does not guarantee future recommendations, citations, traffic, calls, or revenue.
What does it mean for AI to “know” your business?
It means an answer engine can find consistent, current, specific information about what you do, who you serve, where you operate, what makes you relevant to a buyer’s question, and how a third party can verify those facts.
Answer engines do not magically know your business. They assemble an answer from the signals available to them. If those signals are missing, inconsistent, thin, or confusing, the AI either leaves you out, misplaces you, or confuses you with another company. Showing up in AI is not the goal by itself. Being found, described accurately, and recommended confidently is.
Why did we become our own first visibility client?
Because we were not willing to sell a process we had not run ourselves. We call it Client Zero: before pitching the work, we put Edge IQ Consulting through the same audit we would run for a contractor or a property manager.
The hypothesis was simple. If we made the evidence about our business clearer and more consistent, answer engines would understand and represent us better over time. The scope was our own site, our structured data, our business listings, and our off-site citations. What was outside scope was any attempt to control or force a specific AI answer. We measured on a fixed weekly cadence so progress was visible rather than assumed.
What was the starting point?
A score of 32 out of 90, and some uncomfortable findings.
- The money query, the search a buyer would actually use, returned competitors. Edge IQ Consulting did not appear.
- A branded search placed us in the wrong city. The AI described Edge IQ Consulting as a Fayetteville, Arkansas business. We are based in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
- We were at risk of being confused with an unrelated technology company with a similar name.
If an AI consultancy that watches this closely can be misplaced and left out, the same thing can happen to a roofing company, an HVAC company, a plumber, an electrician, or a property manager that has never checked.
What did eight weekly snapshots show?
We scored nine signals on the EDGE AI Visibility Index (Answers, Recognition, Citations, History, Identity, Technical, Expertise, Credibility, and Transparency), 90 points in total, and recorded the score every week alongside what we had shipped.
| Snapshot | Date | Day | Score | What changed or was observed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aug 31 | 0 | 32 | Baseline. Money query absent. Branded search returned the wrong city. |
| 2 | Sep 1 | 1 | 38 | Published the /about page with a founder bio and Person structured data, and added an llms.txt file for AI crawlers. |
| 3 | Sep 6 | 6 | 38 | Held. Clean pre-campaign baseline. Confirmed the wrong-city finding. |
| 4 | Sep 13 | 13 | 39 | Launched the blog and a service page. Site grew from 9 to 13 pages. |
| 5 | Sep 20 | 20 | 44 | Grew on-site citations from 2 to 6 and added the verified Google Business Profile. Site grew to 15 pages. |
| 6 | Sep 27 | 27 | 44 | Held flat. No new inputs shipped that week. |
| 7 | Oct 4 | 34 | 45 | Landed the first independent directory citation with the correct location. Money query appeared at number one for the first time. |
| 8 | Oct 11 | 41 | 48 | Published the full content engine (site grew to 179 URLs) and migrated to a faster stack with structured data site-wide. |
What changed between 32 and 48?
Targeted work across identity, access, verification, citations, content, and technical foundation. Not random content activity.
We made our identity clear and verifiable
We published a founder bio page with Person structured data, documenting a 20-plus-year enterprise background and current certifications. This gave answer engines a verifiable person and a consistent set of business facts to work with. Our Identity signal moved from 5 to 7, and our Expertise signal from 4 to 7.
We gave AI crawlers something to read
We added an llms.txt file at the site root so AI systems have a clean, plain-text description of the business and its services. This was our first technical fix for the answer-engine era.
We verified the business locally
We claimed and verified the Google Business Profile for Edge IQ Consulting in Skiatook, Oklahoma, with a consistent name, phone number, and service area. Local verification is one of the strongest signals for correcting a wrong-location error.
We built citations, then earned an independent one
We grew the consistent business references on our own site from 2 to 6, then landed our first independent, authoritative directory listing with the correct location and service description. Moving beyond owned profiles to an independent source is what pushed our Citations signal from 2 to 6, the single largest signal gain of the project.
We answered real buyer questions at depth
We expanded the site from roughly 9 pages to 179 URLs, including more than 120 question-first articles across roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, auto repair, salons and spas, and property management. Each one answers a question a real buyer asks. Our Answers signal moved from 5 to 9.
We rebuilt on a faster foundation with structured data everywhere
We migrated the site to a faster stack and added article, breadcrumb, and author structured data across every post. Clean, fast, well-structured pages are easier for both search and answer engines to read. Our Technical signal moved from 6 to 9.
What does this result not prove?
A great deal, and we want to be clear about it.
- A higher score on our own index does not guarantee a mention or citation from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, or any other answer engine.
- It does not prove rankings, website traffic, phone calls, leads, or revenue.
- AI outputs vary by tool, model, prompt, location, timing, sources, and personalization.
- A 48 out of 90 is progress, not a finish line and not a certification.
- This is Edge IQ Consulting’s documented internal result. It is not a claim about what a typical business will see.
We also saw the outcome wobble. On day 34 Edge IQ Consulting appeared at number one for the money query for the first time. One week later, on day 41, it dropped back to absent. We are not hiding that. We are highlighting it. Answer-engine results are still volatile, and the work often takes 90 to 180 days to fully show up. The win this early was not a screenshot that looked good for one week. The win was that the underlying facts improved: the AI stopped placing us in the wrong city, correctly identified Edge IQ Consulting as a Skiatook, Oklahoma business, and began separating us from the lookalike company. The outcome is still early. The process is not.
What is the repeatable Search and AI Visibility process?
Four stages, run in order and documented.
- Audit. Establish the baseline. Test the queries a buyer would actually use, score how answer engines currently find and describe the business, and identify where the information is missing, inconsistent, vague, or hard to verify.
- Remediation. Fix the highest-priority gaps first: identity and business facts, local verification, citations, question-first content, structured data, and site technical health. Remediation by Edge IQ Consulting is optional. The client keeps the audit report and a 90-day plan either way.
- Monitoring. Recheck on a regular cadence and document what moved. This is where AI Visibility Management fits for businesses that want ongoing measurement and content.
- Optimization. Prioritize the next actions based on evidence, not novelty.
This mirrors the EDGE Framework we use across every engagement: Evaluate the current state, Discover the gaps, Generate prioritized improvements, and Execute with documentation and measurement. We diagnose before we prescribe.
What does this mean for a local or home-services business?
If AI can misplace an AI consultancy, it can misplace a contractor. It can recommend a competitor, confuse your service area or specialties, or leave you out of the answer entirely. Most owners will not find out until a customer says, “I asked AI and you did not come up.”
This is still early, and that is the opportunity. The businesses that build clean, verifiable signals now will be easier for answer engines to understand later. The businesses that wait may spend the next year wondering why AI keeps naming someone else.
How can you tell whether AI knows your business?
Ask yourself these six questions.
- Can a real customer question be answered clearly from a current page on your site?
- Are your service, audience, location, and difference described consistently everywhere?
- Can someone independently verify your basic business facts and expertise?
- Do your important pages answer buyer questions directly, rather than relying on broad marketing language?
- Is your structured data accurate and aligned with what the page actually says?
- Do you have a documented baseline and a repeatable way to monitor it?
If you are not sure, that is the point of the audit. A Search and AI Visibility Audit gives you a documented snapshot: whether answer engines can find you, whether they describe you correctly, whether your local signals are strong enough, and what to fix first. No ranking promises. No hype. Just a clear score, the evidence behind it, and a practical plan.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how findable, accurate, and recommendable your business is when people ask answer engines like ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity for help. It is based on the signals those systems can find and verify about you. It is not the same as ranking in AI.
Does a higher AI visibility score guarantee that an AI tool will mention my business?
No. A score helps identify and track information gaps and improvement opportunities over time. It does not guarantee rankings, citations, mentions, traffic, leads, or revenue.
Why did Edge IQ Consulting use itself as Client Zero?
Because we would rather prove a process on our own business before asking a client to invest in it. Client Zero is proof before pitch.
How long does AI visibility work take to show results?
In our own case, we documented measurable signal movement over 41 days, and answer-engine outcomes often take 90 to 180 days to settle. Your starting condition, scope, existing content, and the third-party platforms involved all affect the timeline. There is no universal number.
What does the Search and AI Visibility Audit include?
We test the buyer queries that matter for your business, score your current visibility across the nine signals of the EDGE AI Visibility Index, document what AI gets right and wrong today, and give you a prioritized 90-day plan of what to fix first. You keep the report. Remediation is optional.
